the boys of summer

I want to remember their little wet bums and hands full of seashells, eyes wide on the birds soaring above, and little legs running too fast for their bodies in the soggy sand. They run to the edge and pull back quickly as the tide threatens to cover their feet with water that you’d have to be numb to get in. That’s summer as I remember it and I’d say that’s how they will remember it, too.

Last night before bed, we went to Salmon River Beach to run out the last of the boys’ energy. It’s easily one of the most underrated beaches in Nova Scotia but then again, most of the beaches in Guysborough County tend to be that way. I almost like keeping it like that so we can selfishly enjoy them ourselves.

As they say (whoever ‘they’ is) “it was one for the books” - and it was.

“Look, Mummy. I make Paw Prints!” - wes, almost 3, showing me his foot prints in the sand.
