nova scotia summer II // wes

DSC01861 copy.jpg

When we were little, we lived downstairs and my grandparents lived upstairs. On summer mornings, I can remember waking up early and going out with Grampie Carman (who Wes is named after), snacking on peas out of his garden. Fast forward 25+ years and here we are; same house, same Grampie, and same garden only we’re sharing it with another generation.

To my knowledge, there are no photos of Grampie and I in the garden when I was a kid but I still remember it plain as day. When we would finish up in the garden, he would go up to get ready for work. He’d set me on the counter and share his shaving cream, giving me a small comb to pretend I was doing the same. It’s funny the things you remember about being a kid.

Photographer or not, I love documenting my child. This set of photos is a strong contender for some of my favourite images I’ve ever photographed. Just a few snapshots of a little boy in his great-grandfather’s garden on a foggy summer morning to tug at your heart.
